Królewicz Olch begleitet einen hochintelligenten Jungen und zeigt dessen Blick auf die Welt. Dieser Film ist auf sehr künstlerische Weise umgesetzt, sodass man ihn nicht als herkömmlichen Film bezeichnen könnte. Ineinander verwobene Welten, bei denen nicht immer klar ist, ob es sich dabei um Realität oder Traum handeln, beherrschen den Film. Die düsteren Zitate aus Goethes Erlkönig geben dem Film eine bedrückende Stimmung. Auch die dunkle, Text schreiende Musik verleiht dem Film etwas Surreales.
Das Verständnis für den Film wird insoweit getragen, dass man mit dem Jungen mitfühlt, wenn es seiner Mutter mal wieder nur um die Preise geht. Auf die Frage: „Liebst du mich?“ erhält er nie eine Antwort.
Es wirkt, als wünsche er sich manchmal, einfach nur normal zu sein, an nichts forschen zu müssen, von seiner Mutter geliebt und den Klassenkameraden akzeptiert zu werden. Doch all das ist für ihn in weiter Ferne. Das ganze ist sogar so unwahrscheinlich, dass es nur in Parallelwelten stattfinden könnte, die er in seiner Vorstellung allerdings regelmäßig besucht.
Der plötzlich auftauchende Vater gibt dem Film einen Hauch von Menschlichkeit. Auch wenn er sehr wild, einem Wolf gar nicht so unähnlich ist, kann man ihn, seine Liebe und das Verständnis für Tiere noch eher nachvollziehen als die Einstellung der Mutter. Durch die unterschiedliche Musik, die verschiedenen Orte, die jeweils einem der beiden Charaktere zugeordnet werden können, und die Farbtöne wird dieser Kontrast hier dargestellt. Die jeweilige Musik wird ständig wiederholt. Bei der Mutter ein nerv tötender Klingelton, der unterstreicht, wie wenig man sich mit ihr identifizieren kann (und vielleicht auch soll), bei dem Sohn das Lied des Erlkönigs. Der Erlkönig scheint ihn magisch anzuziehen. Vieles dreht sich um ihn, doch woher diese Fokussierung kommt, bleibt unverständlich. Vielleicht dreht sich alles um das Ende, als das Kind in den Armen des Vaters plötzlich tot ist oder aber um die Tatsache, dass das Kind ganz andere Dinge, eine ganze andere Welt sieht als der Vater, und dies noch weiter verdeutlicht werden soll. Die Entscheidung über die Bedeutung bleibt jedem selbst überlassen.
Der Vater selbst wird von ebenfalls dunkler, auf Wölfe passenden Musik begleitet.
In diesen Film kann sicherlich sehr viel hineininterpretiert werden, da er auch viel Freiraum für eigene Auslegungen lässt. Er ist deswegen sehr verwirrend, irritierend und für das Publikum nicht sonderlich einfach zu verstehen. Bestimmt muss man sich auf den Film einlassen, aber selbst dann schafft er es nicht, mitzureißen.
Die einzelnen Szenen lassen nur verwirrt zurück.
Sicherlich, es handelt sich hierbei um Kunst und gerade Kunst muss interpretiert werden, um ein höheres Verständnis zu schaffen, doch gerade dieses Verständnis wird hier verfehlt.

Krolewicz Olch shows a highly intelligent boy and his view on the world. Being a very artistic movie this film is not what would be seen as conventional. Its interwoven worlds make it not quite easy to separate between reality and dream. Somber quotes of Goethes “Erl-king” and dark, shouting music dominate this movie, making it appear highly surreal.
As a viewer one can partly understand the protagonist. His mother only cares about the possible prices he could win in scientific competitions. His often asked question “Do you love me?” never gets answered. It seems as if he sometimes only wishes to be a normal boy: Not having to do research or experimenting on something, just being accepted by his classmates and loved by his mother. Since that seems to be highly unlikely he is seeking refuge in his parallel worlds finding comfort in his imaginations.
The sudden appearance of his father makes the film a bit more human, a bit more understandable. Although he seems to be more wolf than human one can feel his love and general understanding in animals which makes him easier to comprehend than the mother. Both are being characterized by a particular melody, which is played repeatedly at their appearance. In case of the mother this is the sound of her highly annoying ring tone. The father is characterized by a darker sound, more wolfish. Here again we have the preference for the father, being highly annoyed by the mother’s ring tone and passing that on to our conception of her.
Whenever the boy appears this dark song of the Erl-king is played. It seems as if he was magically attracted by this song, this poem. It is not quite understandable where this particular focus comes from. However, there is room for interpretation. Might be that it is all about the end: The child dies in the arms of his father, metaphorically showing that he himself dies although his mother is trying to save him - or the money she could win with the competitions - in her way. Might be that it is all about the child sensing different things than its father. In all cases this figuratively would be about the mother. It is up to the viewer, how to interpret that.
Though there is lots of room for interpretation it is only confusing and not easy to comprehend. It surely is necessary to be open, to be willing to accept this kind of movie but however hard I tried this simply was not possible. This might also be due to the advanced time of the week having already watched so many other films and not being able to take in such kind of films anymore. However, other people who did not watch as many films as I did seemed to have similar understanding problems.
